If you’re a side sleeper and you’re sleeping on the wrong pillow that is either too soft or too firm, your head has to extend sideways to meet the pillow. And when you sleep in that kind of impossibly stretched position for too long, you’re over-extending your spine and neck muscles, causing yourself all kinds of pain.
As a back sleeper, if you’re sleeping on the wrong pillow, your neck can be forced too far forward which is essentially destroying your posture and possibly giving you that hunchback look.
And if you’re a tummy sleeper, we encourage you to find a way to sleep in a different position because this has got to be the worst position you could sleep in. You’re essentially hyperextending your neck backwards because you have to sleep with your head to the side, meaning you’re sleeping in a full rotation position. This is very painful and can also make it hard for you to breathe. If this is you, we suggest trying to sleep with a weighted blanket. It can help you to adjust to sleeping on your back or on your side because it will hold you in place comfortably.
