Weighted blankets have been rising in popularity for a while now and I think everyone wants to get their hands on one. I don’t blame them, weighted blankets provide great benefits like improving one’s sleep, lowering anxiety and stress, but most importantly a weighted blanket helps autism, fibromyalgia, and Alzheimer’s. We wanted to put what we believe to be the two highest quality weighted blankets in the UK up against each other to see which one is best.
If you didn’t know, glass filled weighted blankets are the most luxurious weighted blankets out there.
Not only are they more environmentally friendly, but they’re the most comfortable and silent weighted blankets because of how tiny the glass beads are. Glass beads are like the texture of sand and can be more compact in tiny pockets, making the weighted blanket more smooth, without the bulk a plastic filled weighted blanket would be. Both Kalm Koala and Gravity are glass filled weighted blankets.
No one wants a bulky blanket because it’s hard to maneuver and feels overwhelming. The whole point of a weighted blanket is to help you feel more calm and rested, and the Kalm Koala does that better hands down.
Let’s also take a look at the materials, shall we? When we compare the Kalm Koala’s cover to the Gravity’s, there’s really no contest. The Kalm Koala’s mink side is way more smooth than the Gravity’s warmer side. Then when we compare the Kalm Koala’s bamboo silk side to what I can only assume is the Gravity’s cotton side (although, their site does say it’s supposed to be velvet; there was no distinction between the summer and all year covers) the softness and smoothness is like day and night. The team all agree that they’d rather sleep under the Kalm Koala’s bamboo silk side than the Gravity’s cotton because the silk is way nicer on the skin. I cringe thinking about those having to sleep under the Gravity’s scratchy cotton side. How anyone with sensitivity issues could fall asleep under that is beyond me.
When it comes to accessibility, we’re talking about how easy it is to take off the cover, wash it, and put it back on.
Both Kalm Koala and Gravity use the same tie technology to keep the weighted blanket in place. They both use the same amount of ties, but here’s the difference:
The Kalm Koala has their ties spread out so that there is one at the very corners of the weighted blanket and the cover so that when the weighted blanket is inside the cover it feels like one solid blanket. It wasn’t difficult washing the cover and putting it back on.
On the other hand, the Gravity has their ties about four inches down from each corner, which makes it so the weighted blanket isn’t flushed to the insides of the cover. The team found this extremely annoying because when you were using the Gravity, you always felt like there was a gap between the cover and the actual blanket. It didn’t feel like one solid blanket. It wasn’t difficult washing the cover and putting it back on.
We also noticed that the Gravity’s cover easily picked up dust and fluff, which probably means you’ll have to wash it more often. If that’s the case, we do wonder how long the integrity of the cover would hold.
Gravity’s site does mention that you can also wash your weighted blanket as well as the cover in the washing machine; however, you might want to pay attention to your washing machine’s weight restrictions. Honestly, you can’t just put a 8kg, let alone 12kg, weighted blanket in any washing machine.
With both Kalm Koala and the Gravity, the price of the weighted blankets vary depending on size.
Let’s compare the same sized weighted blanket:
Kalm Koala’s 135cm x 200cm at 4kg costs £165.
Gravity’s 135cm x 200cm at 4kg costs £149.
Let’s get down to the brass tacks: the Kalm Koala is clearly the better of the two.
For one, the Kalm Koala is a more comfortable blanket with its ability to make its weighted blanket smooth and the materials alone are way nicer to the touch.
Two, the Kalm Koala had smarter placement of their ties to keep the blanket and cover as one.
Last but not least, the Kalm Koala gives you so much more value for your money.
